I watched it!

I went to see 'Tears of Barren Hill' on Tuesday.

And yes, I went alone. I don't think anyone would pay $42 to see something they don't understand. I was glad that I went to see regardless of what because I loved it!

I may not understand the show but I enjoyed the experience. The show is a production in memory of Cheng Yan Qiu's 50th death anniversary. Cheng Yan Qiu is one of the greatest dan in China.

Best of all, I get to see Shi Xiao Mei LIVE! I have only seen her once before when she did the Dream of Freud show in SG some years ago. I am very happy this time to see once again her charm on stage. Hee hee. This time, she acted as a dan. I was so surprised! She sang as a dan and WITHOUT a mic. My god, the voice is so powerful. Without the mic I can listen clearly to the power of her voice. I love it. Awww... I want to hear it again!!!

The director said that he had given Shi the challenge to act as dan but explained that Shi is actually still acting as sheng. Shi was confused and the director explained that Shi is acting as Cheng Yan Qiu who is a man, who is acting as a dan. Lol.. Shi xiao mei was confused.

The director told us that Shi xiao mei went on to up her watersleeves level by practicing the Cheng style dan watersleeves. She put in quite an effort on it as Cheng was well known for his watersleeves. Finally, the director decided to cut off that watersleeves part.....

He said," I told Xiao mei that it's ok even if I cut off the watersleeves part because I can already see it in her. She don't have to use it on stage. I feel that the stage is not a place for people to show off."

Lol.. This sentence got stuck in my head.

The stage is not a place for people to show off.

Anyway, though I didn't understand much of the show, I have learnt quite a bit from the post show talk about opera performances. That is why, I always attend those post-perf talks.

Too bad for those who didn't watch it. You missed Shi Xiaomei's wonderful singing.

I have to skip it because I had school production going on... and $42 isn't quite cheap for a "poor scholar" like me.. haha... Indeed the stage is not a place for people to show off... unless it's a fashion runaway.. so for those who want to show their stuff, please join the fashion industry (if they have what it takes)... gam siah! heehee..

AC you are not a poor scholar, you are a budding artist~ Haha I like the way you describe showing off on stage. It's so funny! I have seen so many show offs on stage, they should all join the fashion industry!
