Nanyin Night at GCB

On 18, 19 and 20 Feb, Sheng Hong Temple, commonly known as gcb by my friends, organised this Nanyin concert. Ponyo is now the Artistic Director of Sheng Hong Arts Institute and she asked if I can help her with these 3 days performances. Though I was busy, I agreed to help her.

I was in charge of the subtitles those 3 days because according to her, no one else can handle the subs. It was quite a rush for me cuz I have got rehearsals on both 19 and 20 Feb.

The show went on smoothly but I didn't think it will work if they performed continuously like this, in a traditional way. Singaporeans move fast and even arts have to move fast too. It can't stay the way it is 1000 years ago and expect people who are moving so fast to appreciate it. I think they should incorporate more contemporary stuff in their performance. Like what SL did. Not sure anyone of you have see SL's shows but so far, SL has performed nanyin in a more modernised way. I think that the troupe from Quanzhou are too traditional. They need to come up with new peformances styles, fusing modern art and traditional art together.

Anyway, I am not touching in this area nor am I a working for nanyin's preservation so I shouldn't talk so much.

The costumes and the hairstyles look nice though...

Then on Sunday morning, ponyo made me wake up at 6am to accompany her and her quanzhou troupe mates to Mt Faber! I had to reach there by 7am and go hiking with them. I really didn't want to go but ponyo pestered me for about an hour on the phone and I gave in.

I was damn tired you know...

Her group photo taken at Henderson Waves.

After the hike, we brought them to Vivo to shop and buy stuff so that they can bring back to their country. They were nice people, very friendly and natural. Most of them were quite young like 19 or 20 years old.

Though I was tired, I thought it wasn't that bad to bring them around. I am a good tour guide! LOL...

And I think the environment is wrong for this kind of performances lor.. in temple fairs usually people will look for fanfair kind of entertainment, nanyin is like out of the way. However, if you go to those public parks or old city area in Quanzhou and watch nanyin performances there, you don't get the same "out of the way" feel lor.. I believe it's how the artform blends into the surrounding to create a cohesive and enjoyable experience for the audience

md: I never photoshop her.. she really jumped.

AC, unfortunately, only gcb can provide a free venue like this. If they were to hold it somewhere else then they got to pay. Even if they hold it at hong lim park, they will still look out of the way... worse, with those cars zooming around around it.

Hong Lim Park somehow looked a bit too modern for it anyway.. Quanzhou is different because it still has a bit of that "antique" look. But ya, to survive in a place like Sg should really go the SL style lor.. sad to say, we're too modernised for anything traditional already! Sigh..
